When an interview starts out with “I’M DOUG DORR AND I’M ADDICTED TO ALPHA 6 “, I knew I found the right person to feature on the launch day of our new site. Who better to interview than someone SO passionate about what they do for a living, and the products they use!?
Doug’s work has been around the kustom kulture and hot rod scene for over 19 years and he’s ALWAYS up to something new, or painting on/with something that most people would never even think to. (He even paints with grease, guys. GREASE. And the paintings are awesome! ) His innovative approach to not only painting, but continuous marketing of his work, is definitely something to look up to, and the fact that he’s so supportive of other artists and is a genuinely nice guy is the cherry on top.
Fresh off the road from a cross country trip, Doug was nice enough to answer a few questions for us about his life as an artist, and share some great tips on being a full time artist.
“My name is Doug “DoRr” and I’m addicted to Alpha 6. I joined “Alphaholics” LOL Feb. 27th, 2019. That’s the day I received my first order of paints.”
How Long have you been an artist?
“I have been painting and pinstriping Professionally FULL TIME for 19 years now. Was painting as a side job way more years than that since I was in JR High!”
How would you describe your style, what’s your favorite thing to paint?
” My style? Hmmm I always like to do different styles. At least I try to so I can keep people interested. Favorite projects? Not sure. Hell honestly all my projects are my favorites because I love what I do for a living. If I had to choose just one I would say painting my side views of custom cars. “
Do you have any advice for new artists?
“No matter how much people cut your art down you just keep at it and use those assholes to better yourself. Here’s the biggest advice I have. In the art world DO NOT COPY OTHER ARTIST WORK. Never copy n ARTIST painting n call it your own. That will start a fire in your business and that is not the way to go to start a name for yourself. Create your own style. “
Who would you say are your influences in art?
“My influences were of course my Dad, Ed Roth, Von Dutch, The artist of MAD magazine, Von Franco, Bob Spina, to name a few. “
Favorite thing about being an artist?
” Being able to create whatever the hell I want and having someone purchase it from me. I took down my website many years ago. I stopped doing damn near all commission jobs about 4 years ago. It took me many years to get to that point too! I mainly do live feed paintings damn near every day on my facebook page. Every once in a while on my instagram and am doing my best to get things going on my youtube channel ArtbyDoRr.
